Here I have taken half a cup of chana dal and half a cup of toor dal, washed it a couple of times in running water, and soaked it for 1 hour.
lets cut the green beans and keep it ready.
I have used the Cuisinart food processor to cut the green beans.
After soaking for an hour drain the water completely and grind it lentils with 2-3 red chilies or more chilies according to your choice into a coarse paste.
The green beans and lentils are ready to be cooked in the instant pot to make paruppu usili.
To make the process quicker I’m going to steam the lentils and green beans at the same time. I used the steamer basket for the green beans and another bowl for steaming the lentils in the instant pot.
Add some water in the inner pot place the trivet we get with the instant pot.
On top of it, you can place the lentil paste bowl in a bowl and then the steamer rack.
By placing in this order the nutrients in green beans will go into lentils while steaming.
Turn on the steam mode with ‘high pressure’ 7 minutes. Do a natural release.
Heat the oil in a cast-iron pan or use the saute function in instant pot and follow the process. Add sesame oil or oil of your choice, mustard seeds,hing, urad dal.
Add the steamed lentils and cook for 3 minutes with a clear lid. Open the lid and using the potato masher crumble the lentils.
Add salt to taste, steamed green beans and mix it gently. Cook for 3 more minutes. Delicious paruppu usili is ready to serve with rice.

Paruppu usili is a traditional South Indian dish with a combination of steamed crumbled lentils with finely chopped green beans or banana flower etc.
Ingredients
- 2 cup Green Beans Chopped
- 2 tbsp Sesame oil oil of your choice
- 1/2 cup chana dal
- 1/2 cup toor dal
- salt to taste
- 1 tsp mustard seeds
- 1 tsp urad dal
- 1/4 tsp hing
- 1/4 tsp turmeric Powder optional
- 2 nos red chilies according to your spice
Instructions

Turn on the instant pot and press steam mode,high pressure,7 minutes.

Add a cup of water in the inner pot and place the coarsely grinded lentils in a bowl with a trivet below.

Place the steamer basket with chopped green beans on the top.

Steam it for 7 minutes and do a natural release.

Heat the cast iron pan or use the saute function in instant pot and follow the process. Add sesame oil or oil of your choice, mustard seeds,hing, urad dal.

Add the steamed lentils and cook for 3 minutes with a clear lid. Gently mix it every one minute so that the lentils get crumbled.

Add salt to taste, steamed green beans and mix it gently. Cook for 3 more minutes. Delicious paruppu usili is ready to serve with rice.
