Paruppu usili

Paruppu usili is a traditional South Indian dish with a combination of steamed crumbled lentils with finely chopped green beans or banana flower etc.

Ingredients

  • 2 cup Green Beans Chopped
  • 2 tbsp Sesame oil oil of your choice
  • 1/2 cup chana dal
  • 1/2 cup toor dal
  • salt to taste
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp urad dal
  • 1/4 tsp hing
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric Powder optional
  • 2 nos red chilies according to your spice

Instructions

  1. Turn on the instant pot and press steam mode,high pressure,7 minutes.

  2. Add a cup of water in the inner pot and place the coarsely grinded lentils in a bowl with a trivet below.

  3. Place the steamer basket with chopped green beans on the top.

  4. Steam it for 7 minutes and do a natural release.

  5. Heat the cast iron pan or use the saute function in instant pot and follow the process. Add sesame oil or oil of your choice, mustard seeds,hing, urad dal.

  6. Add the steamed lentils and cook for 3 minutes with a clear lid. Gently mix it every one minute so that the lentils get crumbled.

  7. Add salt to taste, steamed green beans and mix it gently. Cook for 3 more minutes. Delicious paruppu usili is ready to serve with rice.

Recipe Notes

  • If you dont have red chilies you can substitute with red chili powder.
  • Mustard seeds, urad dal, hing are staples of south Indian cooking. If you don't have it ignore.
  • I like to make paruppu usili in cast iron for the even cooking and some layer of crispness we get from the lentils makes it even tastier.
  • You can make it combination of lentils like mentioned in the recipe or you can use just chana dal or toor dal to make this recipe.
