Cabbage dal also known as cabbage kootu is a simple dish made with cabbage and lentils and spices. This south Indian cabbage kootu can be served with rice or any Indian bread.
Turn on the instant pot add chopped cabbage, chana dal, salt,,1 green chili, tomato, turmeric powder, and enough water to cover the instant pot dal and cabbage.
Close the lid and set the time to 8 minutes and do a natural release.
If the instant pot dal is too watery put it in saute mode until you achieve the desired consistency.
Optional: If needed you can make a paste with 1/2 cup coconut + 1 green chili + 1/2 tsp of cumin seeds and add it to the instant pot dal recipe at the end and give quick rolling boil in sauté mode and turn off the instant pot.
Heat a pan with a tablespoon of oil or ghee. Once the oil or ghee turns hot add 1/4 tsp of mustard seeds, Once the mustard seed splutters add 1/2 tsp of crushed cumin seeds and 1/2 tsp of crushed black pepper. Finally toss it with 1 sprig of curry leaves and hing.Pour it in top of the cabbage kootu.
