Instant pot dal recipe (using cabbage)
I used one small cabbage for this recipe and a half cup of Chanadal and 2 medium tomatoes should be fine and 1 Thai green chili for this cabbage kootu recipe.
This is a south Indian version of cabbage and lentil soup. If you are looking for red cabbage and lentil soup substitute green cabbage with red cabbage

Cabbage kootu preparation
My easy way to chop cabbage is with my food processor. Its saves so much of my time. I chop whole cabbage at a time and store it in a ziplock or air-tight container.
Rinse the chana dal a few times in the running water until the water runs clear. Wash and soak Chana dal for half an hour. If you don’t have Chana dal use moong dal or toor dal or a combination of these dals you can use for this recipe.
Chop the tomatoes and keep it ready.
If you want onion, garlic you can add it to the kootu recipe. For this quantity use 1 onion and 2-3 garlic pods. Chop it and keep it ready.

instant pot cabbage dal recipe
Turn on the instant pot add chopped cabbage, chana dal, salt,,1 green chili, tomato, turmeric powder, and enough water to cover the instant pot dal and cabbage.
Close the lid and set time to 7-10 minutes and do a natural release.
If the instant pot dal is too watery put it in saute mode until you achieve the desired consistency.
Optional: If needed you can make a paste with 1/2 cup coconut + 1 green chili + 1/2 tsp of cumin seeds and add it to the instant pot dal recipe at the end and give quick rolling boil in sauté mode and turn off the instant pot.
Instant pot Cabbage dal seasoning :
Heat a pan with a tablespoon of oil or ghee. Once the oil or ghee turns hot add 1/4 tsp of mustard seeds, Once the mustard seed splutters add 1/2 tsp of crushed cumin seeds and 1/2 tsp of crushed black pepper. Finally toss it with 1 sprig of curry leaves and hing.
Pour it in top of the cabbage kootu.
Enjoy the cabbage dal with rice or any crepe or any Indian bread .

Ingredients
- 1/2 cup chana dal
- 1 small cabbage
- salt to taste
- 1 number tomato I used some grape tomatoes
- 1 number green chilli

- 1 tbsp ghee or coconut oil
- 1 tsp mustard seeds
- 1 pinch hing
- 1 sprig curry leaves optional
- 1/2 tsp crushed cumin seeds
- 1/2 tsp crushed black pepper
