Potatoes are a staple in our Indian kitchen. At least once a week we make a recipe using the potatoes instant pot method. Some of the repeated side dishes in our home like poori masala/potato masala, garlic mashed potatoes for my kids, and instant pot baby potatoes curry whenever I get Costco baby potatoes.
Choosing the Right Potato for the recipe
Different types of potatoes require different cooking times and methods in order to achieve the perfect texture. For example, waxy potatoes such as red and fingerling are better suited for dishes that require being left whole with the skin on, whereas starchy potatoes such as Russet and Yukon Gold tend to work better for recipes that require mashed or puréed potatoes. So be sure to choose the right variety of potatoes for whatever dish you plan on making!
Prepare Potatoes Properly Before Cooking them in the instant pot
Before you start making potato in your Instant Pot, you must properly prepare them in order to cook them healthily and perfectly. Please clean the potato and scrub the potatoes thoroughly before cooking. Then, depending on your recipe and the type of potato you are using, the cooking time, will ensure that they cook evenly and get that perfect texture every time.
After having an instant pot it’s a breeze to steam potatoes in the instant pot or any vegetables. All you need to have a proper time chart tracking that suits your recipes and vegetables. This is something I follow whenever I steam, cook potatoes, or new vegetables in the instant pot.

One more option is we can even dump vegetables like potatoes in the ip and set a delay timer and boil potatoes in the instapot, potato curry, or make some mashed potatoes. Sometimes to feed my baby as an evening snack I steam potatoes instant pot with a delay timer. When the baby wakes up from an afternoon nap baby potatoes it will be ready.
How to cook potatoes in the instant pot?
I will add roughly 1.5 to 2 cups of water in the inner pot and if needed place the trivet and add the potatoes in IP.
Now close the lid and set pressure to ‘high pressure’ for 8 -10 minutes depends on the number of potatoes in the instant pot the cooking time needs to be adjusted.
Let the pressure release naturally.
Check with a knife whether the potatoes cooked perfectly.
How long to cook potatoes in the instant pot?
The timing for cooking potatoes in an instant pot depends on the size, quantity, and type of potatoes you are cooking all matter.
Today I have used russet Idaho potatoes in an instant pot for this recipe sometimes I make baby potatoes instant pot or some kind of small potatoes instant pot so I adjust the time accordingly.

How long does it take to boil potatoes in the instapot?
For instant pot potatoes time, you can try between 8 -10 minutes for any whole potatoes instant pot and adjust accordingly.

Check the potato are cooked to perfection using a QR Test or a Fork
Use either a quick-release and see the potatoes in the ipare cooked as you want or insert a fork into one of the pieces of potato—it should go in easily. If the potatoes are not done, you can reset the instant pot and cook for another few minutes. Just don’t forget to adjust the cooking time!
Use Proper Cooling Techniques After Cooking to Maximize Flavor and Texture
Once the potatoes have finished cooking, it is important to cool them down quickly in order to preserve their maximum flavor and texture. Quickly run each clove of potato under cold water for about 1 minute, or cover the pot and allow it to sit undisturbed for 5-10 minutes. This will help the potatoes stay firm and keep their shape when served.
How to cook instant pot potatoes?
Wash the potatoes a couple of times in the running water, scrub the potatoes to remove the dirt from the skin, and keep them aside.
To the IP inner pot add roughly around 2 cups of water and add 1/2 tsp of salt and 1/4 tsp of turmeric powder to the water and mix it well. In India, we add turmeric powder and rock salt to most of the vegetables while cooking in order to remove the pesticides used on vegetables. So it’s totally optional. You can skip it if you don’t want to add it.
Now add the potatoes and turn on the IP to manual/pressure cook mode and set it to 8 -10 minutes cooking time depending on the size, quantity, and type of potato.
Do a natural release. Your potatoes are ready to use.
