How to cook perfect basmati rice?
You can cook perfect basmati rice as your family likes just by testing 2 or 3 brands of basmati rice, water adjustment as you prefer how you want the rice to be eaten. Some people like instant pot rice more grainy, some like soggy, etc. To test and adjust the recipe according to your family’s favorite.
Which brand basmati rice to use?

What do you need to make basmati rice instant pot?
I use my Instant pot 3 qt for small amount and 6 qt for large amount.
Do i need to soak basmati rice before cooking ?
I prefer soaking my basmati rice for at least 15 minutes for any recipe and wash it once minimum to remove the extra starch.
What methods to cook basmati rice instant pot?
You can cook basmati rice directly in the inner pot or you can even use the PIP method.
Rice PIP method :
Add around 1 cup of water to the inner pot and place the trivet and another stainless steel or Pyrex bowl with the rice and water. Cook for 4-5 minutes with high pressure and do a quick release after 7 minutes.
You can even cook mung dal with this PIP method.Since mung dal doesn’t need more time to cook.
Tips to cook perfect instant pot basmati rice
To begin with any brand of basmati rice. Use 1:1.25 ratio meaning 1 cup of rice whether soaked or not soaked use 1.25 cup of water and 4 minutes with a natural release after 10 minutes or so. You will get perfect instantpot basmati rice. If you need more dry do a QR immediately. If you need the instant pot rice to be soft let the pressure release naturally. Test it and adjust the recipe accordingly.
Saute the rice with little clarified butter(ghee) or just butter to enhance the taste and flavor of rice.
Why did my instant pot basmati rice fail?
- Less or more water
- Soaking or no soaking
- More quantity of rice with less water or less time.

How to store cooked basmati rice?
Let the cooked basmati rice cool down and store it in a glass container for 3-5 days maximum. When ready to eat just dump it in the instantpot on warm mode and enjoy.

Step by step Instant pot basmati rice recipe
In this recipe, I’m using some spices to make the basmati rice more flavorful and this is totally optional. To begin with, I have washed the basmati rice couple of times in running water.
I have soaked the basmati rice for 1 hour just because I had time. Otherwise, I normally wash and soak it for 20 minutes to make the Indian basmati rice.
Turn on the instant pot in saute mode, once it displays ‘HOT’ add around 1 tbsp of ghee and after a minute add 2 bay leaves,2 cardamom seeds,1 star anise,1 inch cinnamon stick and 2 cloves.
Now add the rice and 1.25 cups of water .I add water to the washed rice and soak it in the same water.
Now close the instant pot lid and set pressure cook or manual mode and set time to 3 minutes.Make sure the vent mode is in sealing.Let the pressure release naturally.
Your instant pot basmati rice is ready to serve.
